Understanding security bond

Hiring a helper in Singapore requires a security bond. Think of it as a $5,000 deposit (per helper, except for Malaysian helpers) you give the government. This protects them if you or your helper break any rules or Work Permit conditions. You can't make your helper pay this.

Getting Your Money Back:

You get your $5,000 back only after:

  • You cancel your helper's Work Permit.

  • Your helper returns home.

  • Neither you nor your helper broke any rules.

It usually takes about a week after your helper leaves Singapore. You'll get a letter confirming this.

Losing Your Money:

You lose your $5,000 if:

  • You or your helper breaks any rules (Work Permit or bond conditions).

  • You don't pay your helper on time.

  • You don't send your helper home when their Work Permit ends.

  • Your helper goes missing.

Important Note: If your helper breaks a rule (like those related to pregnancy), you won't be responsible if you can prove you:

  • Told your helper about the rules.

  • Reported any rule-breaking immediately.
